On 13 April, Amwaj reported that during recent talks in the Omani capital of Muscat, US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff presented the Iranian side with a draft agreement that did not demand the dismantling of Iran’s nuclear programme. In addition, the document did not directly threaten military intervention in the event of a failure of the dialogue.
According to the newspaper, Washington’s soft stance and the abandonment of the harsh rhetoric previously characteristic of President Donald Trump have become an important factor in the constructive atmosphere of the talks.
The next round of talks is scheduled for 19 April. It is expected that the meeting will not take place in Oman, but probably in one of the European countries due to logistical difficulties and the long distance between Washington and Muscat.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction with the progress of the dialogue with Iran, telling reporters on board Air Force One:
“I think everything is going well, the situation with Iran, I think, is quite good.”
The talks in Muscat were held in the format of an indirect dialogue – the US and Iranian delegations were in separate rooms, and Omani Foreign Minister Badr Al Busaidi played the role of mediator.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the final stage of the meeting was a brief personal communication between Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi and US Special Representative Steve Witkoff.
Iran, according to media reports, insists on the immediate lifting of sanctions in accordance with the terms of the 2015 nuclear deal. In response, Tehran is ready to return to the restrictions on uranium enrichment established by the agreement during the Barack Obama administration.
