Washington, Jerusalem

The United States and Israel are exploring the possibility of resettling Palestinians from Gaza to third countries as part of a post-war settlement, CBS News reports. According to journalists, in addition to Syria, which was mentioned earlier, Sudan and Somalia are being considered as potential destinations.

This initiative is part of a broader diplomatic effort to end the war between Israel and Hamas, and is also aimed at reconstruction of the Gaza Strip. However, there is no official confirmation of negotiations with the leadership of these countries.

African factor: is resettlement possible?

The situation in the countries considered as potential destinations for Palestinian refugees remains difficult:

– Syria is going through a period of instability after the regime change, and the new government is not commenting on the possibility of accepting IDPs.

– Sudan is engulfed in armed conflict, making it an unlikely destination for Palestinian Arabs. Official Khartoum is currently avoiding public statements on this topic.

– Somalia is struggling with the activity of the Islamist group al-Shabaab, which raises doubts about its ability to become a safe haven for IDPs. Mogadishu authorities said they had not received any official requests from the United States or Israel.

The Gaza problem: finding innovative solutions

The proposal to relocate part of the population of the Gaza Strip is one of the possible elements of a post-war settlement, but this option has already caused controversy.

On the one hand, it can be seen as a way to alleviate the humanitarian situation in Gaza, where infrastructure has been destroyed and hostilities continue. On the other hand, the forced resettlement of Palestinians may cause a broad international outcry and legal questions about its compliance with international norms.

What’s next?

Given the lack of official confirmation and the difficult situation in the regions under consideration, the prospects for implementing this plan remain uncertain. Meanwhile, the war between Israel and Hamas continues, and the search for a long-term solution for the future of the Gaza Strip is gaining momentum in the international arena.
