The delegations of the United States and Russia have reached agreements on a number of issues related to the war in Ukraine during talks in Saudi Arabia. This was stated by US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce, Reuters reported on Tuesday, 18 February.
What does the agreement entail?
According to Bruce, Washington and Moscow agreed to establish a formal consultation mechanism to normalise relations and find ways to achieve peace. The main agreements include:
– Establish a consultation mechanism to ease tensions in bilateral relations and reopen diplomatic missions.
– Formation of high-level negotiation groups to work out ways to end the conflict in Ukraine.
– Laying the groundwork for cooperation in the economic and investment spheres, which can begin after the war is over.
– Maintaining an active dialogue to ensure the effective progress of the negotiation process.
Washington: “We have taken an important step forward”
Tammy Bruce stressed that telephone conversations between Trump and Putin are not enough to establish a stable peace. According to her, concrete actions are needed, and the talks in Riyadh were “the first step in this direction”.
What’s next?
The meeting in Saudi Arabia was the first official direct talks between the US and Russian delegations on the war in Ukraine. New rounds of talks are expected to take place in the coming weeks, which could determine the contours of a future peace settlement.
