The war in Ukraine must end, and for this to happen, both Russia and Ukraine must make concessions. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio in an interview with Fox News journalist Sean Hannity.
According to the US top diplomat, President Donald Trump is convinced that the conflict has reached a deadlock, and neither side has any real plans to end it. Rubio called the situation in Ukraine a “proxy war” between the nuclear powers – the United States and Russia.
“This has to end,” Rubio said.
He also commented on Trump’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House last Friday. According to the secretary of state, the US administration urged Kyiv not to obstruct diplomatic initiatives.
“We need to involve both sides – both Russians and Ukrainians. And we asked the Ukrainians not to sabotage this process. Unfortunately, President Zelensky chose to publicly rebut Vice President J.D. Vance when he stressed the need for diplomacy, effectively undermining the president’s plan,” Rubio said, adding that he was pleased with Kyiv’s change in rhetoric after the incident.
The head of the State Department stressed that ending the war is possible only through compromises on both sides.
“We need to get to the table, and only President Trump can make that happen,” Rubio said.
According to him, two weeks ago, American and Russian representatives met in Washington, D.C., during which Russia expressed its interest in the talks. Now, according to the Secretary of State, it is time to move forward.
“But it’s hard to do that when one of the parties says they’re not interested in peace at all,” Rubio concluded.
