Negotiations between the US and Ukraine on a strategic mining agreement are continuing despite US President Donald Trump’s decision to suspend military aid to Kyiv. This was reported by the Voice of America.
On Wednesday, White House spokeswoman Carolyn Levitt said that the National Security Council was reviewing Ukraine’s funding and the possibility of a complete cutoff of aid.
“The National Security Council has advised that this matter is under review, including the possibility of suspending funding,” Levitt told reporters.
As it became known, Trump decided to suspend military support late on Monday night after a heated discussion with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy during their meeting at the White House. The reason was Trump’s dissatisfaction with Zelenskyy’s statement in an interview with the Associated Press, where he said that “the end of the war is very, very far away”. This provoked a harsh reaction from the US president, who said that “America will not stand for this anymore”.
However, the very next day, during his address to the US Congress, Trump said that he had received a letter from Zelenskyy in which the Ukrainian president expressed his readiness to sit down at the negotiating table and stressed that “no one wants peace more than Ukraine”. In addition, Zelenskyy confirmed his readiness to sign an agreement with the US on the development of rare earth minerals, which could become an important source of strategic raw materials for US industry.
Thus, even amid tensions over military aid, Washington and Kyiv continue to negotiate cooperation in a critical area for both countries. It is expected that in the coming weeks, the parties may agree on the final terms of the deal, which will be part of a broader package of security and economic guarantees for Ukraine.
