On Tuesday, Denmark, the Netherlands, and Sweden announced their readiness to join US President Donald Trump’s initiative to purchase US weapons by European countries for further transfer to Ukraine. This is reported by Euractive.
The day before, President Trump announced that the United States would supply weapons, including Patriot systems, to NATO member states, which would transfer them to Kyiv to strengthen Ukraine’s defence.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stressed that his country is already the largest donor to Ukraine per capita and is ready for new steps of support: “This goes hand in hand with the Danish model of support for Ukraine’s defence industry,” he said. Since the beginning of the full-scale war, Denmark has provided about €9 billion in military aid and €867 million in civilian aid.
Rasmussen added that although Denmark does not have its own Patriot missiles, it is ready to finance their purchase for Ukraine. “We have to work out the details,” he said.
Dutch Foreign Minister Kaspar Veldkamp said that his country was looking at participation in Trump’s plan with a “positive inclination”: “We will see what we can do in connection with Trump’s statements and we will proceed further.”
Sweden also supported the initiative. Defence Minister Pal Jonson said that Sweden welcomed the US decision, which would help to strengthen sanctions against Russia and transfer modern weapons to Ukraine, including Patriot: “Sweden will do its part,” he said, without elaborating.
Thus, the allies demonstrate their readiness for a new model of military support for Kyiv initiated by Washington.
