Israeli special forces conducted a successful operation in southern Syria, during which they detained a Syrian accused of spying for Iran. According to the Israeli military command, the detainee was collecting data on the movement of Israeli troops in the border areas, presumably to prepare possible attacks against Israel. This was reported by Bild.
The Israeli military suspects that the man was acting as part of an Iranian spy network that seeks to destabilise the region and increase Iran’s influence in Israel’s border areas. The military command said that the suspect’s detention helped prevent a possible attack that could have seriously damaged the country’s security.
“The network, which includes the detainee, is likely under the control of Iranian forces. They are trying to use the situation in Syria to carry out subversive activities against Israel,” the army said.
The detainee has now been taken to Israel, where he is being interrogated. Local intelligence services expect to receive new information about Iranian intelligence methods, as well as about possible threats planned against Israel.
