The death toll from the Russian missile attack on Zaporizhzhia, the administrative centre of the region of the same name in southern Ukraine, has risen to ten. The body of a woman was found under the rubble, Zaporizhzhia Governor Ivan Fedorov said on Thursday.
Another person is under the rubble, Fedorov said. In addition, 22 people were injured in the shelling, which destroyed a clinic and an office building in the city centre.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy strongly condemned the “brutal attack” and reiterated his call for Western countries to provide Ukraine with more air defence systems, including US Patriot batteries, to save “thousands of lives” from Russia’s “terror”.
At the same time, a US official warned on Wednesday that Russia could strike Ukraine in the coming days with an experimental hypersonic Oreshnik missile in response to Ukraine’s ATACMS missile strikes against Russia.
Another Russian missile attack on Zaporizhzhia on Friday killed 10 people. These attacks were part of an escalation of attacks on civilian targets in Ukraine.
