New territorial losses for Ukraine: 2024 is a critical year

Russia seized about 3,600 square kilometres of Ukraine’s territory in 2024. This was reported by military resources on Sunday.

The amount of lost territory is compared to the area of the Spanish island of Mallorca or the US Long Island.

November is the most difficult month

According to the military blog Militarnyi, Ukraine suffered the greatest losses in November, when Russian troops seized about 20 square kilometres every day. In total, 610 square kilometres were lost that month.

“Territorial losses in 2024 are significantly higher than in the previous year,” the report says.

Current assessments and strategic situation

As of mid-December, analysts at the UA War Infographics Telegram channel estimated that Russian troops had advanced more than 2,800 square kilometres since the beginning of the year. In December, another 510 square kilometres were added to this figure.

According to the latest reports, Russian troops continue their offensive. Over the last day, new positions were seized near Kurakhove, Pokrovsk and Toretsk, which is under constant fire.

The war has been going on for almost three years

Ukraine continues to defend itself against Russia’s large-scale invasion, which has been going on for almost three years. Despite significant support from Western partners, 2024 was one of the most difficult years in terms of territory loss.

Experts note that the increase in casualties is partly due to Ukraine’s own offensive operations in the summer, as well as attacks in Russia, particularly in the Kursk region.

Ukraine remains resolute in its efforts to restore sovereignty, despite the growing challenges.
