Russia continues large-scale training of reserve troops for the war against Ukraine, according to media reports. According to the Russian Ministry of Defence, in 2023, more than 300,000 servicemen were trained in special reserve regiments. These units are designed to prepare contract soldiers for combat.
Ivan Buvaltsev, the head of the Russian Army’s combat training department, confirmed that reserve regiments are actively operating throughout the country. This initiative is part of a broader strategy announced back in 2022 by then-Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, who announced the creation of reserve regiments for each military grouping.
Amid growing losses and problems with mobilisation, the Russian authorities are trying to attract contract soldiers by increasing their pay. In July, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council Dmitry Medvedev said that almost 200,000 people had signed contracts with the Ministry of Defence in the first six months of the year. In October, an additional increase in regional payments to the military was announced.
The active formation of reserves and mobilisation underscore Russia’s attempts to compensate for losses and strengthen its position in the hostilities against Ukraine.
