Ukraine will receive six THeMIS autonomous unmanned platforms from the Estonian company Milrem Robotics, which will be used for demining Ukrainian territories. The deal is being implemented jointly with the French firm CNIM Systèmes Industriels, ERR reports, citing Milrem’s press service.
“The agreement with CNIM allows us to continue to support Ukraine. Our partnership demonstrates the strength of European defence cooperation and our commitment to providing Ukraine with important capabilities,” said Kuldar Varsi, Chairman of the Board of Milrem Robotics.
The French government fully funded the deal. CNIM will integrate mine clearance and obstacle removal systems on THeMIS, after which the vehicles will be handed over to the State Emergency Service of Ukraine (SESU) under the name ROCUS.
What is ROCUS?
ROCUS is a robotic system that allows deminers to remotely detect and neutralise explosive devices and clear rubble or minefields. Its use in Ukraine could significantly speed up demining and make it safer for personnel.
Who is behind the project?
Milrem Robotics is a leader in military robotics in Europe, headquartered in Estonia. In 2023, EDGE Group PJSC, headquartered in the UAE, acquired a controlling stake in the company.
The company has subsidiaries in Estonia, Finland, Sweden, the Netherlands, Poland and the United States.
THeMIS is a modular unmanned platform that can perform a wide range of tasks, from casualty evacuation to reconnaissance and combat support. In the ROCUS configuration, it is adapted for humanitarian and military demining.
