Ukrainian troops made a breakthrough into the Kursk region of Russia on the morning of 5 May. This was reported by Russian pro-war Telegram channels, as well as journalist Andriy Tsaplienko.
According to them, the Ukrainian Armed Forces advanced in the vicinity of the settlements of Tiotkino and Novyi Puty. There has been no official confirmation from the Ukrainian command, but it is known that a rocket attack was launched in the morning on a bridge in the village of Zvane, presumably to complicate the logistics of Russian troops in the region.
According to reports from so-called ‘military commanders’, Ukrainian forces actively used engineering equipment, including demining machines and special engineering means to overcome fortifications. It is known that the Ukrainian Armed Forces were able to destroy some of the defensive structures, including the so-called ‘dragon’s teeth’, which were installed on sections of the Russian-Ukrainian border to deter armoured vehicles.
This is not the first time that Ukrainian forces have been active in the Russian borderlands. Analysts note that such operations have not only a tactical but also a psychological purpose – to demonstrate the weakness of Russian fortifications and interfere with the enemy’s rear logistics routes.
