US suspends military aid to Ukraine: consequences and reactions

US President Donald Trump has decided to suspend military aid to Ukraine, which could significantly affect Kyiv’s combat readiness. This happened just a few days after a tense conversation between Trump and Volodymyr Zelenskyy at the White House.

Consequences of the decision

According to CNN, the New York Times and Reuters, Ukraine will be able to maintain the current level of fighting for several more weeks, possibly until early summer. However, a further delay could create a significant shortage of ammunition and weapons.

In particular, the decision will affect:

  • Supply of weapons already in transit;
  • Artillery and long-range missiles, such as ATACMS;
  • Air defence, which is critical for deterring Russian attacks.
The European response

The European allies are trying to compensate for the lack of US assistance. The UK and France have already expressed support for Ukraine, but their options are limited. One European official called Trump’s decision “unacceptable” and warned that it could lead to more civilian casualties.

What’s next?

The White House did not explain what Ukraine would have to do to resume arms supplies. At the same time, US officials indicate that Trump may demand a public apology or concessions from Zelenskyy on resources and security issues.

Experts warn that if Ukraine does not receive the necessary weapons, the frontline could undergo critical changes. “Without a sufficient supply of weapons, Kyiv could find itself in a difficult position to accept a peace deal on unfavourable terms,” said Mark Kansian of the US Centre for Strategic Studies.
