At least seven killed in new Israeli strike on Gaza school

At least seven people were killed in a new Israeli airstrike on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in the northern part of Gaza, according to civil defense spokesperson Mahmud Basal, AFP reports.

The targeted facility, Shujaiya School, is located in the Tufah neighborhood and is run by the UN Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA).

The Israeli military has yet to confirm the attack.

This is the second school targeted in the Gaza Strip within the last 24 hours. On Monday, an Israeli strike on the Abu Jafar al-Mansur center in Beit Lahia left at least two dead and several others wounded.

As it often does when attacking civilian infrastructure in Gaza, Israel claimed that the school was being used as a “command center” by Hamas, and said precautions were taken to avoid harming civilians.

Under a similar justification, Israel bombed another school in the same city on Sunday, killing four people.

Five days ago, 15 Palestinians, including women and children, were killed in another airstrike on a school in the Jabalia refugee camp in northern Gaza.

Since the outbreak of the war last October, which has resulted in over 41,600 Palestinian deaths, Israel has struck at least 183 shelters for displaced people, including 163 schools. Over 1,000 people have died in these attacks, according to the Gaza government, which is controlled by Hamas.
