CNN: Sinwar’s body as an opportunity in hostage talks

Israeli sources have confirmed that the body of Yahya Sinwar, the Hamas leader who was killed by Israeli forces in southern Gaza, is being held in a secret location in Israel. The report, which was first reported by CNN, reveals new details regarding possible negotiations for the return of hostages taken during the 7 October terrorist attacks.

According to two sources, Israel’s priority is the release of the more than 100 hostages who remain in captivity in Gaza. Israeli authorities are currently considering various ways to pressure Hamas to release the hostages.

A diplomatic source said: “If Hamas wants to exchange Sinwar’s body for Israelis, dead or alive, that would be an acceptable option.” Both sources believe that Sinwar’s body could serve as a bargaining chip in this difficult situation.

According to one Israeli source, a hostage exchange is likely the only way Sinwar’s remains can be returned to Gaza. “Without an exchange, there will be no transfer,” the source said.

The diplomat added that the return of Sinwar’s remains to Gaza could threaten to strengthen Hamas’s position in the region. If Sinwar is buried in Gaza, the site could become a shrine for his supporters.

On Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Isaac Herzog held a security meeting. They discussed how the killing of Sinwar could open a “significant window of opportunity” for the return of hostages. In a statement on Thursday, Netanyahu called on Hamas members holding Israeli hostages to lay down their arms and return the prisoners. He assured that those who do so will be given the opportunity to “come out and live.”

This situation underscores the complexity and ambiguity of the negotiation process, in which every step can have serious consequences not only for security but also for stability in the region.
