Israeli gas platforms Leviathan and Tamar: Wikipedia.
The Hezbollah terrorist organisation attempted to attack the Israeli gas platforms Leviathan and Tamar shortly before the ceasefire agreement came into force. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing Cursorinfo.
Attempted attacks and the role of the Iron Dome system
The attack included missile and artillery strikes, as well as the use of autonomous underwater vehicles. Thanks to the high efficiency of the Iron Dome air defence system, most of the threats were intercepted, said Chevron CEO Mike Wirth.
Wirth also noted that since 7 October, Chevron has periodically shut down the platforms due to the threat, but long-term disruptions in energy supplies to Israel, Jordan and Egypt have been avoided.
The strategic importance of platforms
The Leviatan and Tamar gas fields are key assets of the Israeli energy system. Since 2019, the Leviathan platform has been providing about 40% of Israel’s electricity.
These platforms are also crucial for exporting natural gas to Egypt and Jordan under contracts worth billions of dollars. Chevron, one of the main owners of the rights to the fields, controls 39.66% of the Leviatan platform and 25% of Tamar.
Earlier, Time Ukraine Israel reported on the increase in rocket attacks by Hezbollah and the activity of the Israeli armed forces in Lebanon. Both sides are seeking to strengthen their positions ahead of a possible ceasefire agreement, which is expected to be concluded within the next two weeks.
