During a large-scale air operation on 26 October, the Israeli Air Force destroyed three of the four S-300 anti-aircraft missile systems in Iran. According to The Wall Street Journal, citing US and Israeli officials, the attack involved about a hundred warplanes that struck Iran’s strategic military facilities.
Despite the S-300’s attempts to intercept some of the missiles fired at the targets, the systems failed to cope with the attack. During the strikes, Iran lost three of the four S-300s it had previously received from Russia; the last system was destroyed during previous operations.
According to the Institute for the Study of War (ISW), one of the destroyed systems was located near Tehran’s airport, while the others were protecting important energy facilities, including an oil port, an oil refinery and a gas field. The loss of these systems leaves Iran’s critical infrastructure without adequate protection against such attacks, as Russia cannot currently transfer more advanced S-400 systems due to their active use in the war in Ukraine.
