A large-scale drone attack took place in the Rostov region of Russia, in particular in the town of Millerovo, which is a strategic point for Russian military aircraft. The attack caused numerous explosions on the territory of a military airfield used to support Russian infantry operating in eastern and southern Ukraine. This was reported by Time Ukraine Israel, citing Liga.net.

According to the interim governor of Rostov region, Yuri Slyusar, a large-scale drone attack began at 21:00 local time, which was actively repelled by Russian air defence forces. “There were no casualties, information about the consequences on the ground is being clarified. However, air defence systems and mobile fire groups continue to actively repel the attack,” he said in a statement.

At the same time, the Russian Ministry of Defence stated that it had allegedly managed to shoot down nine unmanned aerial vehicles in the skies over the Rostov region. However, local Telegram channels, citing testimonies from residents, reported numerous explosions and flashes in the sky, which were also captured on video and quickly spread on social media.

Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation at the National Security and Defence Council of Ukraine, compared the situation in Millerovo to a “disco” on a TV programme. According to him, this airfield is of strategic importance to Russia. It is a key base for frontline aviation, which actively supports Russian ground forces in eastern and southern Ukraine.

Millerovo has been repeatedly targeted by Ukrainian forces. For example, in July 2024, a drone attack at the airfield damaged facilities at at least three locations, as confirmed by satellite images. In addition, on 3 August, the Ukrainian Defence Forces attacked the Morozovsk airfield, also located in the Rostov region.

Russian statements about downed drones and denials of damage to strategic objects do not stop the flow of information coming from the scene. The explosions in Millerovo demonstrate how drone attacks are changing the picture of hostilities at the front and are becoming an important element of the strategy in the fight against the occupation.
