A story of courage
Robert Deegan, 29, a former Irish Army ranger from Newbridge, County Kildare, became a casualty of war after being killed last Thursday while fighting in Ukraine. His death, confirmed only on Sunday, is a sad loss for his family and friends, as well as a testament to the dedication of international volunteers who join the fight for Ukraine. This was reported by the Irish portal Irish Times.
The road to heroism
Deegan, a former member of the Army’s elite Ranger unit, was previously seriously injured, losing one eye in an on-duty IED in October 2022. Despite these difficulties, he did not give up and returned to Ukraine earlier this year to take part in the war on the side of Ukrainian forces.
Operations in Ukraine
In Ukraine, Digan became part of the special unit “Stugna”, which performs difficult and dangerous missions. He died covering the retreat of his team during a battle with Russian troops. This shows his high dedication to work and his willingness to risk his own life for the sake of his colleagues.
Society’s reaction
Irish President Michael Higgins, speaking at the UN Summit in New York, expressed his condolences to Deegan’s family, calling his death a “terrible tragedy.” Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed it was providing consular assistance to the family, but would not comment on the specifics of the case.
Memory of the hero
Robert Deegan’s family is described as a respected military family: his father and brother also served in the Armed Forces. Deegan has always been known for his active lifestyle, high athletic achievements and deep principles. His tragic death highlights the sacrifices made by foreign volunteers in this war, trying to support Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.
