Attack on a civilian vessel: Russia threatens global food security

On the night of 6 October, Russian terrorists struck again at Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. The attack damaged the civilian vessel PARESA, flying the flag of Saint Kitts and Nevis, which was docked at the Pivdennyi seaport. The vessel, which was loaded with 6,000 tonnes of corn for export, is part of Ukraine’s efforts to support global food security.

The press service of the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine reports that the purpose of such attacks is to impede the work of the Ukrainian Maritime Food Corridor and create a crisis on world food markets. According to Vice Prime Minister Oleksiy Kuleba, this is the twentieth civilian vessel to be hit by Russian strikes, and a few weeks ago Russia also attacked a wheat ship bound for Egypt.

According to the Zaporizhzhia regional military administration, the shelling injured three workers, one of whom was hospitalised with mine-blast wounds. The other two are currently being examined in hospital.

Ivan Fedorov, head of the Zaporizhzhia Regional Military Administration, noted that such strikes are part of the aggressor’s systematic attempts to destroy Zaporizhzhia’s infrastructure, which is key to the defence of the country’s southern regions.

Large-scale air strikes: “Daggers and drones

At the same time, on the night of 7 October, Russia launched a large-scale air attack on Ukraine, using three Kinzhal missiles and about 80 air targets, including attack drones. According to the Ukrainian Air Force, two of the Kinzhal missiles were successfully shot down as they approached Kyiv region, and 32 drones were destroyed in various regions, including Mykolaiv, Kyiv, Dnipro, Sumy, Chernihiv, Poltava, and Kharkiv regions.

Ukrainian sea corridor continues to operate despite attacks

Despite systematic attacks by Russia, the Ukrainian Maritime Food Corridor continues to operate. According to the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine, since its launch, more than 70 million tonnes of food have been shipped to more than 2,500 vessels that have departed from Ukrainian ports to countries in Africa, Asia and Europe.

Ukraine remains an important player in global food security, despite Russia’s aggression, which is trying to create a crisis and disrupt food supplies for millions of people around the world.
