On 11 November, the head of the Kurakhiv City Military Administration, Roman Padun, in an exclusive commentary for Suspilne Donbas, reported serious damage to the Ternivka dam of the Kurakhiv reservoir, which threatens the settlements of the Velykonovosilkivska community. This is reported by TimeUkraineIsrael with reference to Suspilne.

“At the moment, we can only confirm the fact that water is flowing through the villages located near the Ternivka dam. However, the condition of the dam itself and the nature of the damage cannot be determined as the approaches to it are blocked due to continuous shelling,” Padun said.

Water in villages: threat and uncertainty

According to the official, reports from other localities indicate that the water is moving as if the reservoir’s floodgates were open. This confirms the possibility of serious damage to the dam. Residents of the areas near the Kurakhivske reservoir have to prepare for a possible evacuation if the water flow increases.

Kurakhivske Reservoir: strategic importance

Located on the Vovcha River, which flows through Donetsk and Dnipro regions, the Kurakhivske reservoir performs a crucial function – it cools the Kurakhivska TPP. Given the security situation, it is important to maintain the stability of its operation, as damaging the dam could affect not only the environment but also the stability of the region’s electricity supply.

So far, the military administration is doing its best to assess the situation, but the constant shelling is creating significant obstacles. The situation remains under monitoring, but details will only be available once it is safe to inspect the dam.
