The IDF Southern Command has revealed new details of the operation that led to the elimination of Yahya Sinwar, the leader of the Hamas terrorist group. According to the TimeUkraineIsrael portal, citing Cursorinfo, the investigation showed the effectiveness of the tactics of isolating and eliminating terrorists.
Progress of the operation
The operation began when the commander of the 450th Battalion of the Byslach Military School noticed a suspicious person running towards a building known by the code name Building 42. After a precise shot, the attacker was wounded in the arm, which later turned out to be Yahya Sinwar.
During the chase, one of the commanders, who was taking a sergeant training course, found fresh bloodstains near a hiding place. Unfortunately, he thought the terrorist had managed to escape. However, further inspection of the area revealed that Sinwar was hiding in the same house. This prompted IDF forces to open fire with tanks and machine guns.
Liquidation and its consequences
The military continued the operation, destroying other targets, and the next day, during a survey of the area, the body of Yahya Sinwar was discovered. One of the main questions that arose during the investigation was why Sinwar did not leave the building and try to hide elsewhere. It turned out that the battalion commander had decided to surround the area, using tanks to block the escape routes. Given these actions, Sinvar decided to stay in the building, which ultimately led to his death.
IDF tactical innovations
IDF officials emphasise that this tactic is part of a strategy to destroy Hamas’s combat capabilities in recent months. This strategy has resulted in the destruction of key terrorist infrastructure, both on the surface and underground, forcing them to act with caution, like wanted criminals.
The Organisational Headquarters, in cooperation with the Southern District Command, collected information on possible hideouts and movements of Hamas leaders. This made it possible to narrow the area of their operations, including operations to identify tunnels and other terrorist hideouts.
Strategic decisions at the highest level
Major General Yaron Finkelman and Shabak Chairman Ronen Bar stressed the need to continue operations in the Rafik area, despite the need to deploy significant forces to other conflict zones. IDF operations in southern Gaza in recent months have been aimed at capturing key Hamas leaders and freeing hostages. The use of drones was critical in identifying Sinwar when he was captured in one of the images.
Important findings on site
Important intelligence data, a significant amount of money, passports, weapons and ammunition were found at the place where Sinvar died. This indicates that he was preparing to escape. In addition, the IDF obtained a video recording showing Yahya Sinwar preparing his hideout in Khan Yunus on 7 October, moving personal belongings, including a television set, into the tunnel. This material will serve as proof to Palestinian Arabs that the Hamas leader was only concerned with his own safety, not that of his associates or civilians.
The IDF’s operation to eliminate Yahya Sinwar not only demonstrates the determination of the Israeli military in the fight against terrorism, but also highlights the effectiveness of the strategies developed to destroy Hamas’ combat capabilities. The importance of modern technology and intelligence in modern military operations is undeniable, and the results of this mission may become a catalyst for further actions in the fight against terrorism.
