Recently, an incident took place in Lebanon that attracted the attention of the international community: the abduction of Fadel Amhaz, who was falsely linked to the Hezbollah terrorist organisation. According to Israel Info, Hezbollah issued a statement claiming that there is no member of their ranks with that name.
According to Lebanese intelligence services, Amhaz had no connection to the military or intelligence and was a commercial ship captain. He was living in an apartment he had rented only a month earlier to attend a seafaring course on the coast close to the sea.
Witnesses say that the operation was carried out with military precision, but with some support from civilians believed to be intelligence officers. One of Amhaz’s neighbours said that when he went out to check the source of the noise, he was stopped and warned in Lebanese Arabic, after which he quickly returned home.
Amhaz’s route from the place of detention was recorded on CCTV cameras, and subsequently, increased activity of security forces was observed in the area. Representatives of the UNIFIL peacekeeping mission stated that their activities do not involve support for abductions and are not aimed at violating Lebanon’s sovereignty.
The incident adds to the already complex relations in the region and raises questions about the accuracy of intelligence and the need to protect civilians in military and special operations.
Earlier, Timeukraineisrael wrote that the man kidnapped during the IDF operation turned out to be a Lebanese army officer.
