The administration of US President Donald Trump has officially rejected the Egyptian plan to reconstruct the Gaza Strip, which was supported by the participants of the Arab League summit. This was reported by The Jerusalem Post.

According to the publication, Washington does not consider the project proposed by Cairo to be viable and insists on alternative scenarios for resolving the situation in Gaza, including the use of American initiatives and support for Israel.

At the same time, the Israeli authorities also criticised the summit’s decision, stressing that Egypt’s plan does not take into account the need to guarantee Israel’s security and eliminate threats from Hamas.

In addition, it has become known that the funeral of soldier Ohad Yahalomi, who was killed in the recent fighting in the south of the country, is taking place in Israel.

Despite the government’s tough stance, according to recent opinion polls, almost 50% of Israelis support the start of ceasefire negotiations, seeking a speedy end to the war and stabilisation of the situation in the region.

As a reminder, the Egyptian plan envisages a five-year reconstruction programme for the Gaza Strip worth more than $50 billion without the forced resettlement of Palestinians and under the control of international partners. However, the idea provoked a restrained reaction in the United States and sharp criticism from Israel, which insists on the security of its citizens as a priority of any agreements.
