Starting Monday, 5 May 2025, the popular Skype messenger will officially cease to operate. After 22 years of existence, the service will be closed, and all accounts, including chat history, will be transferred to Microsoft Teams, the press service of Microsoft Corporation reports.

According to the company, users will be able to export their data until January 2026. After that, all unsaved histories, files, and accounts will be permanently deleted.

“This decision is part of our strategy to unify digital communication and collaboration tools,” Microsoft said in an official statement.

Launched in 2003, Skype has revolutionised the world of online communication. After being acquired by Microsoft in 2011, they tried to integrate it into Windows 10, but gradually the focus of the corporation shifted to the professionally oriented Teams platform, created in 2017 on the basis of Skype technologies.

Thus, the end of the Skype era symbolises the transition to a new digital reality where communication is increasingly integrated into work and business ecosystems.
