An unexpected candidate from the socialists in the presidential elections in Moldova

Александр Стояногло

Former Prosecutor General Alexandr Stoianoglo, dismissed by a decree from Maia Sandu, has been nominated by the Party of Socialists of the Republic of Moldova as their candidate for the upcoming presidential elections, reports the Moldovan publication Unimedia.

Igor Dodon, the former president of Moldova, who was defeated by Maia Sandu four years ago, announced Stoianoglo’s candidacy on Monday. Dodon emphasized that Stoianoglo possesses professional authority, patriotism, personal modesty, civic courage, and principledness—qualities that make him a worthy candidate for the highest state office.

“Alexandr Stoianoglo has all the necessary qualities to worthily hold the highest position in the state,” Dodon stated. “On this occasion, I call on all political leaders to show wisdom, set aside personal ambitions, and support Alexandr Stoianoglo’s candidacy for president. This is a unique opportunity for Moldova. We must demonstrate political maturity,” he added.

The presidential elections in Moldova are scheduled for October 20, 2024, the same day as the referendum where citizens will decide whether they support the country’s accession to the European Union.

Stoianoglo was detained in 2021 right in the prosecutor’s office building where he was preparing to hold a briefing. He was accused of signing documents that facilitated money laundering in the “Russian Laundromat” case, and of acquitting controversial businessman Veaceslav Platon in the bank fraud case.

During his detention, Stoianoglo stated that these actions were “presidential revenge” and “a return to a captured state.” He was dismissed in the fall of 2023 by a decree signed by Maia Sandu. Later, Stoianoglo announced that he would go to court to demand the annulment of the presidential decree.

Context and Significance of the Elections

These elections are extremely important for Moldova as they take place against the backdrop of significant political and social changes in the country. Since Maia Sandu was elected president in 2020, the country has embarked on a path of reforms and European integration, which faces resistance from pro-Russian forces.

The nomination of Alexandr Stoianoglo as the candidate from the Socialists may signify a new phase in the struggle for power in Moldova. Supported by Igor Dodon, Stoianoglo represents the interests of those who seek to return Moldova to a pro-Russian course. His candidacy could unify the opposition and pose a serious challenge to Maia Sandu and her reformist policies.

Prospects and Challenges

Stoianoglo’s success depends on many factors, including the Socialists’ ability to unite various opposition forces and mobilize the electorate. On the other hand, Maia Sandu and her supporters will need to prove that their reforms are delivering real results and improving citizens’ lives.

The referendum on EU accession will also be a crucial issue. Support or rejection of this course will be a key topic in the elections, potentially determining Moldova’s future on the international stage.

Thus, the 2024 presidential elections in Moldova promise to be among the most significant in the country’s history, shaping its future political and economic direction.
