Finance Minister Darren Jones: BBC.
The UK government will continue its unwavering support for Ukraine, even if the political situation in the US changes when Donald Trump becomes president. Finance Minister Darren Jones stressed that London is committed to helping Kyiv restore its territories without any concessions to Russia, TimeUkraineIsrael reports citing the BBC.
Support for Ukraine remains unwavering
In his interview with the BBC, Jones stressed that the UK does not plan to reduce its support for Ukraine, even if the future Trump administration decides to reduce pressure on Moscow or offer territorial concessions. According to him, Ukraine should be able to restore its territorial integrity, as it was before the Russian aggression.
Trump and possible changes in US policy
Donald Trump, who claimed during the election campaign that he could resolve the conflict between Russia and Ukraine “in one day”, left many questions unanswered about his strategy. He said that Russia and Ukraine should sit down at the negotiating table, and that the US should continue to supply weapons to Ukraine, but make it contingent on the outcome of these negotiations.
Former Trump advisers have also suggested that Ukraine should negotiate on the basis of current front lines rather than give up its territorial claims. They added that NATO should postpone Ukraine’s membership as a gesture to try to induce Russia to make peace.
The UK’s commitment to Ukraine
Jones categorically denied the possibility of concessions to Ukraine from the UK. He stated that the country would continue to provide financial assistance to Kyiv and support the Ukrainian Armed Forces in accordance with its NATO commitments. The UK will continue to fight for the restoration of Ukraine’s rights and territory, including Crimea.
Dame Preeti Patel, the UK’s shadow foreign secretary, also supported this position, stressing that Ukraine should not give up Crimea. She noted that the country should maintain a strong relationship with the US and find a common way to support Ukraine.
International reactions and forecasts
The UK and the US will continue to discuss strategies to support Ukraine. Lord Peter Mandelson noted that Ukraine’s freedom is sacred and cannot be bargained for, and economic ties with the country should be strengthened. He stressed the importance of cooperation between London and Washington to ensure the security of Ukraine and its borders so that Russia cannot invade again.
Against the backdrop of these discussions, British Defence Secretary Sir Tony Radakin reported record casualties among Russian troops, which he said was an indication of increased military tension. However, he also warned that the conflict will continue and that decisive action by the international community is needed to resolve it.
Senior UK officials have made it clear that support for Ukraine will remain strong, regardless of changes in the political situation in the United States.
