The current US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken has expressed concern about the future of the country’s foreign policy under the Donald Trump administration. In an interview with the Associated Press on his last day on the job, Blinken said that there is a risk of abandoning Joe Biden’s key initiatives, including those on the Middle East, Ukraine, and international alliances.

Inconsistency as a threat
Blinken emphasised that the Biden administration inherited foreign policy relations that needed to be significantly strengthened. “When we came in, partnership agreements and alliances were seriously shabby. If the past is a prologue, then there are certainly reasons for concern,” the Secretary of State said.

Among the main policy areas that may be revised:

  • efforts to end the conflict in Gaza;
  • support for Ukraine in its struggle to free itself from Russian influence;
  • maintaining strong relations with key US allies.

A call for continuity
Blinken also stressed that in some areas, policy continuity should be ensured, regardless of the change of administration. However, he noted that he did not have detailed information about the approaches of the new Trump team.

Future challenges
Given the history of controversial steps taken by the Trump administration in its first term, the international community will be closely watching the US foreign policy agenda.
