Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that the country may face economic difficulties due to new tariffs promised by US President Donald Trump. However, Canada will respond decisively and immediately. Trudeau said this at a press conference on Friday, 31 January, Reuters reports.
“I will not sugarcoat the situation – our nation may face difficult times in the coming days and weeks. As President Trump has said, he is prepared to impose new tariffs on Canada, possibly as early as tomorrow,” Trudeau said.
At the same time, he promised a “focused, decisive, but reasonable and immediate response”.
“It’s not what we want, but if he (Trump) moves forward, we will also act,” the Prime Minister stressed.
According to Reuters, Canada supplies about 75% of its exports to the US, so the imposition of duties could deal a serious blow to the Canadian economy.
“I know Canadians may be worried, but I want them to know that the federal government and all government agencies have their backs,” Trudeau assured.
In response to the Trump administration’s actions, Canada is expected to introduce its own trade measures and seek support from international partners.
