Canada to join the EU’s ReArm Europe rearmament programme – agreement expected to be signed on 23 June

Canada is preparing to officially join the ReArm Europe programme, a European rearmament initiative amid Russia’s war against Ukraine. This was reported by CBC News, citing government sources.

Prime Minister Mark Carney will sign the agreement on 23 June in Brussels during the Canada-EU summit.

“Canada will come to this summit with a plan for leadership and new investments to strengthen our strength in the service of values,” said Carney.

After signing the agreement, Canada will determine the areas of its contribution to the programme. According to CBC, potential areas of participation include:

  • air defence and missile defence systems;
  • drones and anti-drone equipment;
  • artificial intelligence;
  • means of electronic warfare.

ReArm Europe is a key element of the EU’s strategy to strengthen the defence capabilities of its member states and allies, including through large-scale production and supply of weapons to Ukraine.
