Amid escalating trade tensions between the United States and the BRICS countries, China has called for joint efforts to counter the unilateral tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. During a meeting of BRICS foreign ministers in Rio de Janeiro, representatives of the bloc discussed a joint response to the new US customs restrictions, including a 145% tariff on Chinese exports, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said, according to the Chinese Foreign Ministry.
The Chinese representative said that BRICS is committed to mutually beneficial cooperation and is not aimed at third countries. At the same time, China stressed the need to strengthen multilateral cooperation and counteract protectionism.
President Trump had previously warned that he would impose 100% tariffs on the BRICS countries if they tried to create an alternative to the US dollar in international trade. This has raised concerns about the possible start of a new global trade war.
