On Friday morning, China successfully launched satellites into low Earth orbit, which should ensure the development of the national satellite Internet system. This was reported by state television CCTV.
The Long March-6 rocket was launched from the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Centre in Shanxi Province in northern China at 4:45 a.m. local time (23:45 on Thursday in Kyiv). This is the fourth group of satellites in the Chinese Internet constellation, which is designed to compete with global systems such as SpaceX’s Starlink.
Details on the number, names and characteristics of the satellites are not disclosed, but it is noted that they are to provide high-speed satellite Internet coverage on a national scale, in particular in remote and hard-to-reach areas of the country.
The launch was the 580th in the Chang Zheng series, reflecting the steady pace of China’s space programme and Beijing’s growing ambition to establish itself as a technological superpower in the communications and space sectors.
