China has announced plans to include a nuclear reactor in the lunar base it plans to build by 2030. This step is part of a large-scale programme of lunar exploration and putting China at the forefront of the new space race. The reactor will serve as a source of energy for the base, allowing autonomous operation on the Earth’s satellite. This was reported by Reuters.

The project is being implemented as part of a joint initiative with Russia to establish the International Lunar Research Station (ILRS). China has already carried out a number of missions, including the landing of the Chang’e-4 on the lunar surface and the successful return of Chang’e-5 soil samples.

The ambitious goal is to ensure that astronauts stay on the Moon for a long time, which could become the basis for future missions to Mars. Against the backdrop of Western deterrence, China is actively developing autonomous high-tech solutions, particularly in the field of nuclear energy in extreme conditions.
