Colombia finds a way out of the diplomatic impasse with the US

Colombia’s Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo will travel to Washington for talks with US officials on further cooperation and implementation of bilateral agreements.

Colombia has resolved the issue that arose in its relations with the United States. According to the official statement of the Colombian Foreign Ministry, Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo will arrive in Washington in the coming hours. The purpose of his visit will be:

  • Discussion of the implementation of the agreements. The parties should exchange diplomatic notes and clarify the mechanisms of bilateral cooperation.
  • Resolving deportation issues. The Colombian authorities have confirmed their readiness to receive their citizens returning as deportees from the United States, with respect for their rights and guarantees of decent treatment.

The Colombian government under the leadership of President Gustavo Petro announced its intention to facilitate the return of compatriots deported from the United States:

  • Organisation of air travel. The presidential plane will be used for the return of citizens. This decision is aimed at ensuring safety and comfort during their arrival at home.
  • Guarantees for deportees. The government emphasises the creation of conditions that are consistent with their status as Colombian citizens.
