In response to growing security threats in Europe, Croatia intends to significantly increase defence spending – from the current 2% of GDP to 2.5% by 2027 and 3% by 2030. This was stated by the country’s Defence Minister Ivan Anušić during the opening of the Adriatic Sea Defence and Aerospace Exhibition in the capital Zagreb, Reuters reports.

“Croatia is working intensively to develop its defence industry and further cooperation with its allies,” Anušić said.

In addition to financial growth, Zagreb’s focus is on modernising its army. In particular, the Croatian Armed Forces are negotiating with Germany to purchase 50 Leopard tanks, which are due to arrive in 2028.

The move is part of a broader effort by NATO member states to strengthen their military capabilities amid growing concern over a possible decline in US involvement in European security.
