Wisconsin voters backed Susan Crawford, a Democratic candidate, in the state’s Supreme Court election, which helped maintain the liberal majority of 4-3. This was a blow to Donald Trump and Elon Musk, who actively supported her opponent, conservative Brad Schimel, AP reports.
Record-breakingly expensive campaign and Musk’s defeat
This election campaign was the most expensive judicial race in US history, with over $90 million spent by candidates, parties and political groups.
“As a girl from Chippewa Falls, I never imagined I would be fighting for justice in Wisconsin against the richest man in the world. And I won! ” said Crawford in her victory speech.
Elon Musk and his political allies alone invested more than $21 million in an effort to get Schimel elected. However, Crawford was 9% ahead of her opponent, gaining 191,000 more votes with 88% of the ballots counted.
Trump refrained from commenting
Despite his defeat, Donald Trump did not comment on the Supreme Court election. Instead, he welcomed the passage of another initiative in Wisconsin to strengthen voter identification.
Democrats see this victory as a step towards regaining control of the House of Representatives in 2026.
“The people of Wisconsin have strongly rejected the influence of Elon Musk, Donald Trump and billionaire interests,” said Ken Martin, chairman of the Democratic National Committee.
