Donald Trump has said that if he returns to the presidency, he will order the construction of a modern missile defence shield similar to Israel’s Iron Dome. This was reported by The Economic Times.
“We must immediately begin construction of the most technologically advanced Iron Dome missile shield to protect the United States,” Trump said at a meeting with Republican lawmakers in Florida.
What is Iron Dome?
Israel’s missile defence shield, known as Iron Dome, effectively protects the country from missile and drone attacks. Since it was commissioned in 2011, it has intercepted thousands of missiles with an impressive accuracy rate of about 90%, according to Rafael, the company that developed the system.
Initially, Israel developed the system on its own after the 2006 Lebanon war, but the United States joined the project, providing technological support and billions of dollars in financial assistance.
Why does the US need its own Iron Dome?
Trump stressed that the creation of such a system is necessary to strengthen US national security in the face of growing global threats. The plan provides for the adaptation and modernisation of technologies to cover the entire territory of the country.
Trump’s announcement signals his intention to actively develop the defence sector and use proven solutions to protect American infrastructure.
