U.S. President Donald Trump has suggested that residents of the Gaza Strip could be relocated to Egypt and Jordan as part of a peace plan to resolve the conflict in the region. The statement came amid a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas that has been in place for two weeks. This was reported by AP.

The ceasefire that came into effect on 19 January allowed for the exchange of four Israeli hostages for approximately 200 Palestinian prisoners.

Speaking on Saturday, Donald Trump compared the Gaza Strip to a “dismantling site” and stressed that he had already discussed the situation with King Abdullah II of Jordan and was planning to hold talks with Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.

“We’re talking about 1.5 million people, and we just have to clean up the mess there. This region has been through a lot of conflict over the centuries. I don’t know, but something has to change,” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One.

The President proposed to build housing for the IDPs in other Arab countries where they can live in peace. He added that the resettlement could be temporary or long-term.

At the same time, Donald Trump stressed the importance of ending the conflict before his official inauguration on 20 January. According to France Presse, he also unblocked the supply of powerful bombs to Israel, which the previous Joe Biden administration had suspended due to humanitarian risks.

The situation in the Gaza Strip remains critical. According to the UN, most of the 2.4 million people in the region were forced to flee their homes due to the fighting that began after Hamas attacked Israel on 7 October 2023.
