US President Donald Trump said that his administration is considering filing a lawsuit against The New York Times, accusing one of the most influential US publications of “interference, including in the election”.
The politician wrote about this on his Truth Social platform, adding that the media should be “held accountable for potentially illegal behaviour”. Trump also mentioned possible lawsuits against CBS News and other media outlets critical of him.
This is not the first time that the former president and the media have clashed: Trump has repeatedly called journalists “enemies of the people”, and after his return to the White House, he intensified his campaign of pressure on the press.
The latest outbreak of discontent was triggered by ratings published by The New York Times, The Washington Post and ABC News, which recorded a significant drop in support for Trump among Americans.
In February, the White House administration even restricted access to the Associated Press for refusing to use the alternative name “Golf of America” instead of the established “Golf of Mexico”. Earlier, there were attempts to reform or shut down such broadcasters as Voice of America, Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty, and Radio Free Asia.
If the case is brought to court, it could become a precedent in the modern history of the United States for restricting press freedom at the highest level.
