Against the backdrop of the escalating conflict between Israel and Iran, the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, called for an immediate return to diplomatic means of resolution. In a conversation with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, she stressed that the risk of further escalation in the Middle East is extremely high, and only diplomacy can prevent a catastrophe.
Kallas, who recently took up a key position in the EU’s foreign policy, stressed in a post on social media platform X that the bloc has always had an unwavering position: Iran must not obtain nuclear weapons. According to her, it is political and diplomatic dialogue that can pave the way for a stable and lasting settlement.
The European Union, Callas said, is ready to provide full support to any international efforts aimed at de-escalation.
This statement was made against the backdrop of a sudden escalation: after Israeli air strikes on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, Tehran responded by firing dozens of missiles at Israeli territory, including strategic targets in the centre of the country.
