Discussions have begun in the European Union about the possible resumption of Russian gas purchases. According to the Financial Times, citing sources, this initiative was supported by some officials from Germany, Hungary and other EU countries, which has already caused serious criticism among Ukraine’s allies.

Supporters: cheap gas and the possibility of dialogue

Proponents of this idea argue that a return to gas supplies from Russia could reduce energy prices in Europe and facilitate negotiations with Moscow, which, they say, could be a pretext for a ceasefire.

Opposition: security threat and US pressure

However, this approach has met with strong opposition from countries that actively support Ukraine. Resumption of Russian gas imports could undermine the European strategy of energy independence from Moscow and jeopardise existing sanctions.

In addition, US liquefied natural gas (LNG) suppliers seeking long-term contracts with the EU are concerned that the possible transit of Russian gas through Ukraine could make their product less competitive.

Ukraine’s reaction: “energy corruption”

Commenting on the situation, Andriy Kovalenko, head of the Centre for Countering Disinformation, said that the support of this initiative by Germany and Hungary was not accidental.

“These are exactly the countries where Russia has been developing energy corruption and buying officials since the late 90s,” he stressed.

Discussions are ongoing, but it is clear that the idea of returning to Russian gas is splitting the EU. The decisive factor may be not only economic arguments, but also geopolitical pressure, in particular from the US and Ukraine.
