The Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC), which represents the EU in privacy matters, has officially opened an investigation against social network X (formerly Twitter), owned by billionaire Elon Musk, an ally of US President Donald Trump, Politico reports.
The investigation concerns how the personal data of European users, published in open posts on X, could be used to train the Grok chatbot, an artificial intelligence developed by Musk.
“This is a possible violation of EU data protection laws, in particular regarding the transparency and legality of information collection, even if it is publicly available,” the DPC said.
This is not the first warning for X: last year, following the lawsuits in Ireland, the company temporarily suspended the use of EU citizens’ data for AI training. Now it is being checked whether Musk has complied with his obligations or whether the data has been used again.
The investigation comes amid growing EU scrutiny of large tech companies, especially following the adoption of new laws on artificial intelligence and personal data protection.
