The European Union has proposed to impose sanctions on several Chinese companies that, in Brussels’ view, are actively contributing to the development of military technologies for Russia. In particular, we are talking about companies that help to develop strike drones used in attacks on Ukraine. This was reported by the Time Ukraine Israel portal, citing Bloomberg.
Sanctions against Chinese companies and Russian oil tankers
According to documents provided by Bloomberg, the EU plans to include Chinese companies that supply key components for Russian drones in the sanctions list. In addition, the new measures may ban more than 45 Russian oil tankers from accessing European ports. These measures are aimed at limiting Russia’s ability to circumvent existing sanctions and reducing its oil revenues.
G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting and Further Actions Against Russia’s Support
The proposal for new sanctions comes on the eve of an important meeting of the Group of Seven (G7) foreign ministers to be held in Italy. The meeting will discuss increasing international pressure on China and other countries that support Russia in its military efforts against Ukraine. These measures are expected to be supported by all 27 EU member states.
China’s denial of charges and criticism of sanctions
China, in turn, strongly rejected these allegations, stating that it has not provided lethal assistance to any party to the conflict. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stressed that China strictly controls the export of dual-use goods, including drones, and opposes unilateral sanctions that have no basis in international law.
New sanctions package: impact on Russian and Chinese companies
The proposed sanctions package also includes the freezing of assets of more than 50 individuals and 30 organisations linked to the Russian military industry. In addition to Russian companies, the list would also include Chinese firms that cooperate with Russian companies in the development of attack drones or supply critical components such as engines.
China’s position: neutrality or support for Russia?
Despite these accusations, China continues to insist on its neutrality with regard to the war in Ukraine. Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasises the importance of restoring international ties and ensuring the stability of the economy, which is facing some difficulties. China has repeatedly stated that it will not provide lethal assistance to any party to the conflict, but its cooperation with Russia is causing concern in the West.
Sanctions as part of the EU’s strategy towards Russia and its allies
In general, the new EU sanctions package is part of a broader strategy aimed at increasing pressure on Russia and its allies, as well as at reducing Moscow’s ability to circumvent international sanctions. The inclusion of Chinese companies in the sanctions list shows that the EU is ready to apply tough measures to all countries that actively support Russia in its aggression against Ukraine.
