European Commission: Russia’s new strikes on Ukraine show escalation, not desire for peace

Russia’s attacks, including the use of an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), demonstrate the Kremlin’s growing aggression and lack of interest in peace talks. This was stated by European Commission spokesperson Peter Stano during a briefing on 21 November.

“We are following reports that Russia has used an intercontinental ballistic missile against targets in Ukraine. If this is confirmed, it will be a new round of escalation on Putin’s part,” Stano said.

The European Commission spokesperson noted that such actions by the Kremlin not only pose a direct threat to Ukraine, but also signal a serious change in Russia’s approach to war.

“The use of such a missile will be not just an escalation, but a new qualitative change in Russian aggression. This is another proof that Putin is not interested in any dialogue about peace,” he added.

In addition to the possible use of ICBMs, Russia continues to strike at Ukraine’s critical infrastructure, including energy. Peter Stano stressed that such actions contradict any statements about the Kremlin’s desire for de-escalation.

“Instead of seeking a compromise, Putin continues to play the nuclear game, engages the North Korean military and launches strikes that worsen the humanitarian situation. This is a clear course for escalation,” the European Commission representative concluded.
