A massive explosion has occurred in Iran’s largest container port, Shahid Rajai, killing at least 18 people and injuring more than 700. Reuters reports this with reference to Iranian official sources.

According to preliminary information, the tragedy was caused by improper storage of chemicals in containers. The explosions were so strong that windows were smashed for several kilometres around, and the sound was heard even on the island of Keshm, 26 km from the epicentre.

Iranian President Massoud Peseshkian ordered an urgent investigation into the incident. Firefighters are currently battling the fires and trying to prevent the fire from spreading to other parts of the port. The entire port has temporarily suspended operations.

Shahid Rajai, located near the Strait of Hormuz, is a strategically important hub for Iranian container traffic, so the consequences of the incident could have a significant impact on trade in the region.
