Russia’s Federal Security Service has announced the prevention of a series of assassination attempts on senior officials of the Russian Ministry of Defence, which were allegedly planned by Ukrainian special services. This was reported by the FSB press service on Thursday, 26 December.

Detention of suspects
According to the FSB:

  1. Four people suspected of preparing assassination attempts on Russian military personnel involved in the war against Ukraine and their family members were detained.
  2. One of the detainees, according to the Russian side, came from Ukraine, using a transit route through Moldova and Georgia. He planned to use an improvised explosive device disguised as a power bank to blow up the car of a high-ranking military officer.

Other incidents

  • Another suspect allegedly planned an attack using explosives disguised as a folder with documents. Two people were detained in this case.
  • The fourth detainee, according to the FSB, is a resident of Moscow. He is accused of espionage: he allegedly collected information about the places of residence and work of the Russian military and passed this information to the Ukrainian special services.

The FSB has not provided independently verified evidence of its allegations. Such statements by the Russian special services are often part of the information warfare and serve to justify repressions within the country and mobilise society against Ukraine.

Ukraine has not yet commented on these allegations.
