The German Parliament’s Budget Committee has called on Finance Minister Jörg Kukis to approve an additional €3 billion in military aid to Ukraine. This was reported by Reuters.
The request received the support of the opposition Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the Free Democrats (FDP), while representatives of the ruling coalition (SPD and Greens) abstained from voting.
Financing and political nuances
The Committee does not have the authority to decide on additional assistance without the approval of the Minister of Finance, but in practice such requests are usually granted.
Members of the budget committee from the CDU and SPD assured that the budget has enough money for this funding. At the same time, Chancellor Olaf Scholz supports additional military aid, but insists that it can only be financed through an exemption from the debt brake to attract additional borrowing.
