Greenland votes for the future: independence from Denmark or economic stability?

Greenland is currently holding elections that could determine the future of the autonomous region. One of the key issues in the campaign is the desire for independence from Denmark.

After Donald Trump announced in 2019 that he wanted to buy Greenland, the discussion about independence intensified. Many locals, including the Inuit indigenous people, want independence, not wanting to remain under Danish control or become an object of international trade.

However, political forces are divided in their views, with some demanding immediate withdrawal from Copenhagen’s control, while others stress the need to achieve economic stability first. Currently, Denmark’s financial support accounts for a fifth of Greenland’s GDP, and the country’s own economy depends on fishing and tourism.

The elections will decide whether Greenland will be able to take a step towards independence in the coming years or continue economic cooperation with Denmark. The final decision will depend on the results of the vote and further negotiations between the two sides.
