UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres arrived in the Canadian city of Kananaskis to participate in the G7 Summit, which began on Tuesday, 17 June. According to Deputy Spokesperson for the Secretary-General Farhan Haq, the key topic of Guterres’ participation will be energy security in the context of global instability.

As part of a special discussion to be held on the sidelines of the summit, the UN Secretary-General plans to raise the issue of diversifying energy sources, developing new technologies and attracting investments to make energy supply more reliable and affordable for all regions of the world.

In addition, according to Farhan Haq, António Guterres will hold a number of bilateral meetings, including with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who is chairing this year’s G7 summit.

The UN Secretary-General’s participation is expected to add a global dimension to discussions on strengthening energy resilience, especially in the context of ongoing conflicts, climate change and the growing need for green transformation.
