The new generation Bayraktar TB3 drone, developed by Baykar, has successfully completed its first landing and take-off from the deck of the Turkish Anadolu amphibious assault ship, opening up new opportunities for the Turkish Navy. This was reported by the Time Ukraine Israel portal, citing the specialised publication Militarny.
The introduction of drones into the Turkish Navy is a significant step in enhancing Anadolu’s operational capabilities. Such ships are increasingly integrated into modern warfare concepts, where drones play a key role. The experience of launching the Bayraktar TB3 from Anadolu’s deck can make a significant contribution to the development of the concept of “drone carriers” – versatile ships adapted to use drones for various purposes, which provides advantages in combat and humanitarian operations.
Technical features of the Bayraktar TB3: enhanced capabilities for modern operations
The Bayraktar TB3 is similar in appearance to the TB2 model, but it is larger and has the ability to fold its wings, which allows it to be conveniently placed on the deck of warships such as Anadolu. In addition, a specialised command centre is planned to be installed on the ship, which will allow for the control of several drones simultaneously, which will significantly expand operational capabilities.
The Bayraktar TB3 is significantly superior to its predecessor, the TB2. Its maximum take-off weight reaches 1450 kg, and its payload can be up to 280 kg. The newest drone is equipped with six points for hanging weapons, which allows it to use modern high-precision weapons. The maximum flight time of the Bayraktar TB3 is more than 50 hours and its top speed is 300 km/h. This drone first flew in October 2023 and is currently being used for testing.
Anadolu: the flagship of the Turkish fleet
The Anadolu ship, built to support long-term maritime operations, is becoming an important element of Turkey’s maritime security. Its size allows for the use of both helicopters and drones. In particular, the ship’s deck can accommodate up to 10 helicopters or 11 drones, and the hangar can accommodate up to 19 helicopters or 30 drones. In addition, the Anadolu can be equipped with F-35B maritime fighters, which ensures its versatility.
The 232-metre-long, 32-metre-wide amphibious assault ship can reach speeds of up to 39 km/h and has a range of up to 17,000 km. Its modernised intelligence systems include the SMART-S Mk.2 three-dimensional radar, anti-torpedo defence system and the GENESIS-ADVENT combat information and command and control system.
Due to its multifunctional design, Anadolu is capable of performing a variety of tasks, from combat operations to humanitarian operations and the transport of military equipment. The ship’s internal dock allows for the deployment of amphibious assault boats to deliver armoured vehicles ashore, which significantly increases the efficiency of land operations.
Turkey sets new standards in naval forces
The departure of the Bayraktar TB3 from the Anadolu is another step in Turkey’s efforts to improve its naval strategy and integrate drones into maritime operations. Thanks to such innovations, the Turkish fleet is becoming more autonomous and technologically advanced, which significantly expands its capabilities in the current geopolitical tension.
